FROEDTERT & MCW SOUTH SIDE FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM

The mission of the Froedtert & MCW South Side Family Medicine Residency Program is to train family physicians with the expertise and skills to provide individualized, evidence-based, culturally competent care to patients and families. This program was accredited in 2021, It is a partnership between the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Department of Family & Community Medicine and Froedtert Hospital, the region’s only Academic Medical Center, to address the growing need for compassionate and skilled family physicians who can provide care to our communities.

PROGRAM BACKGROUND

The Medical College of Wisconsin’s Department of Family and Community Medicine has a fifty-plus-year history of training family physicians in Wisconsin. In partnership with Froedtert Hospital, family medicine residents can expect a broad and rich experience with learning opportunities across the spectrum of care, specifically dedicated toward learning the aspects of care most important to our patients and communities.

The F&MCW Forest Home Health Center in Milwaukee, WI, is a facility designed to provide health care to the community and education to family physicians. Services provided include Family Medicine, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Behavioral Health, Medication-Assisted Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder, Osteopathic Manipulation, Refugee Care, Community-Based Research, and Community Programming with an emphasis on care for Spanish-speaking populations.

PROGRAM DIRECTOR’S WELCOME

Welcome! I am the program director of the Froedtert & MCW South Side Family Medicine Residency Program, and I couldn’t be more proud of what this community has built together.

Three years ago, we opened our doors at the Forest Home Health Center in the heart of Milwaukee’s 53204 zip code — one of the city’s most vibrant and diverse neighborhoods, and home to one of its largest Latino/a populations. What began as a vision for community-centered, culturally responsive medical education has grown into something even better than we imagined. We now have residents at every stage of training, a faculty team with deep expertise across the full spectrum of family medicine, and a growing presence in the South Side community we are privileged to serve.

Our program is built on a simple belief: that the best physicians are trained where the need is greatest. Through our partnerships with Froedtert Hospital, Children’s Wisconsin, and the Medical College of Wisconsin, our residents gain access to the highest level of academic and clinical resources — all while remaining rooted in a community practice setting where relationships and continuity of care truly matter. Beyond our institutional partnerships, we work closely with our Patient and Community Advisory Board and a network of local community organizations whose involvement is central to both our identity as a residency program and our effectiveness as a health center.

We are particularly proud of our Spanish Immersion Curriculum, which prepares residents to care for patients in their native language — a critical skill on Milwaukee’s South Side and in many of the challenging practice settings our graduates will go on to serve. Our website is also the first among MCW Affiliated Hospital programs to be fully translated into Spanish, a reflection of our commitment to accessibility and belonging for applicants and patients alike.

Whether you are a prospective resident, a current applicant, or a member of our community, I invite you to explore what makes South Side special. Our recruitment season runs annually from September through February, and we welcome you to reach out at any time.
