“Why South Side?”:
“I chose the South Side Family Medicine Residency Program because it was intentionally created to serve the 53204 community and is continually adapting to the needs of their patients. I was particularly drawn to the authenticity of the residents, faculty, and staff who humbly strive to be the best physicians, teachers, and teammates that they can be. I am particularly looking forward to training in sports and lifestyle medicine and growing as a holistic primary care physician within this comprehensive program.”

“Why South Side?”:
“Why South Side” : When I interviewed for this program I really enjoyed getting to meet and talk to the PD’s and residents and it felt like they really wanted to learn about who I was as a person and my interests which gave me such good vibes about the program! They also really checked off the boxes that I was interested in about giving residents the independence to feel confident as new physicians with support being there if needed, as well as opportunities to support the residents in whatever certifications they wanted to attain, or procedures they wanted to learn. I was born in Milwaukee and being able to come back after 25 years really made it all feel full circle, and of course “Go Packers!”.

“I am so excited to be a part of the South Side Family Medicine Residency Program because it is intentional about teaching us to care for the diverse needs of people we serve in our community. This is especially evident in our Spanish immersion and Medical Spanish curriculum, which acknowledges the rich history and culture of the Latino population here in Milwaukee. The faculty, staff, and residents are also passionate about what they do, and are all so supportive!”

“Why South Side?”:
“There are many reasons I chose the South Side FM Residency Program, with the most important being the program’s supportive and collaborative learning environment. After meeting the residents and faculty, I knew that South Side would be exactly that and so much more. The program’s strong focus on being a pillar in the community dedicated to treating its diverse patient population was another factor that played into my decision. The commitment to addressing the unique needs of an underserved community—particularly in behavioral health and addiction medicine—aligns with my passion for providing comprehensive, patient-centered care. I’m looking forward to contributing to and learn from a program that emphasizes both community impact and long-term patient relationships.”

“Why South Side?”:
“Being from the area I recognize Milwaukee as my home and my community. Throughout living here, I found my reasons as to why I wanted to pursue a career in medicine and much how this community gave me those reasons it has also given me the opportunity to pursue that dream. The dream of helping Milwaukee’s south side underserved population. With the program taking extra steps in training culturally competent physicians such as facilitating Spanish lessons I knew this was a space that held medicine’s mission with the utmost priority. The mission of giving high quality care to any patient that might walk in through those metaphorical doors that separate the everyday world from the world of medicine. As a second-generation Mexican immigrant, it is a genuine interest of mine to be a part of these spaces where the refugee, immigrant and underserved seek care. As a native Spanish speaker, I found that this clinic was the perfect place where I could be the most useful as a resident physician, learner and educator. In the field of family medicine not only do we treat our patients but the communities that are patients interact with as well. Additionally, having affiliations to an academic center I am given the opportunity to continue to be in environments where I can assist in galvanizing the next set if aspiring physicians. The Milwaukee community has helped me get to where I am and I want to return that favor by giving back through service. I am confident that this program will impart on to me the comprehensive training that will help in realizing my professional goals.”

“Why South Side?”:
“I chose the South Side program because of its commitment to addressing the needs of an underserved community in Milwaukee—an approach that aligns closely with my passion for holistic, community-centered care. Furthermore, I was drawn to the robust opportunities for learning – both on the inpatient side at Froedtert Hospital and Children’s Wisconsin as well as in the ambulatory setting at the Forest Home clinic. Overall, I’m excited to be returning to Milwaukee to serve the South Side community, while learning from and working alongside the program’s supportive, compassionate, and knowledgeable faculty, staff, and residents.”
