THE FOUNDATION FOR INDIVIDUAL, FAMILY, AND COMMUNITY HEALTH
Family medicine is more than a specialty — it’s a philosophy. The Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM) at the Medical College of Wisconsin is built on the belief that exceptional care begins with understanding the whole person: their health, their relationships, their community, and the social and economic forces that shape their lives.
In a medical landscape increasingly defined by specialization, DFCM takes a different approach. By integrating behavioral sciences alongside clinical medicine and centering the patient-physician relationship within the context of family and community, we train physicians who see beyond the exam room. Our community-based residency programs and forward-thinking partnerships create learning environments where residents develop not just clinical skills, but the cultural awareness and social understanding that truly excellent primary care demands.
